HISTORY OF DENTAL IMPLANTS Dentists have attempted to solve the problems associated with missing teeth utilizing implants during much of the 20th century. Interestingly, even ancient civilizations demonstrated the concept by attempting to implant pieces of bone sculpted to mimic the shape of a tooth and placing it in the socket after a tooth was lost and then stabilizing it with a fine gold wire attached to the adjacent teeth. While the implants placed in the early days of modern dentistry worked some of the time, real success was realized following the development of osseointegrated titanium implants. When it was discovered that titanium proved to be completely biologically compatible when placed into healthy bone, predictable results were realized and techniques were developed to replace missing teeth ranging from a single tooth to an entire arch of teeth in one or both jaws. ![]() |
